Chef Passes TSA Checkpoint At O'Hare With Four Huge Knives In His Bag E-mail
Friday, 17 June 2011 18:18

This news comes to us via The Consumerist (highly recommended if you haven't visited them yet).  Chicago award winning chef Paul Kahan accidentally had 4 chef knives in his carry one while boarding a flight.  Did the TSA find them?  Of course not.  But the TSA goons did obsess over the contents of the chef's pockets instead..... It is almost like the TSA is GIVING tips to actual terrorists.

"Pro Tip #154: Distract our idiot low wage workers on a power trip by doing something, anything, suspicious with your pockets. That totally will distract us from the super sharp knives in your carry on."

Newlyweds: TSA Ruined Our Honeymoon Over Bottle Of Contact Lens Solution E-mail
Thursday, 16 June 2011 01:18

Leave it to the Federal Government (via the ever blundering TSA) to find a way to screw up what should be the happiest weekend of a couple's life, their honeymoon.  The Consumerist has the story.

According to the article, the newlyweds were arrested for more than an hour despite arriving 75 minutes early, causing them to miss their flight, and then miss their Florida cruise, over the mysterious contents of a contact lens solution bottle, an occurrence so rare to be sure, that it warranted bringing out special testing equipment and highly trained TSA goons to verify that the newly weds weren't in fact murderous terrorists trying to sneak on a binary explosives solution (in errr... a single bottle).

Ruining lives as soon as they join: The TSA.

Special Needs Son Harassed by TSA at Detroit Metropolitan E-mail

This is another disgusting example of TSA ineptness. From MyFoxDetroit.com

ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) - The Mandy family says they were on their way to the happiest place on earth (Disney), but had to go through hell to get there.

"I realize they're trying to keep people safe, but come on, does he look like a terrorist?" said Dr. David Mandy.

The family was going through security when two TSA agents singled Drew Mandy out for a special pat down. Drew is severely mentally disabled. He's 29, but his parents said he has the mental capacity of a two-year-old, which made the experience that followed at metro Detroit's McNamera Terminal that much harder to deal with.

"You have got to be kidding me. I honestly felt that those two agents did not know what they were doing," Mandy told us.

Dr. Mandy claimed they asked Drew to place his feet on the yellow shoe line, something he didn't understand. They proceeded to pat his pants down, questioning the padding which was his adult diapers. When the agents asked Drew to take his hand and rub the front and back of his pants so they could swab it for explosives, his dad stepped in and tried to explain that Drew was mentally challenged.

"They said, 'Please, sir, we know what we're doing,'" Mandy said.

The TSA agents saw Drew holding a six-inch plastic hammer.

"My son carries his ball and his hammer for security. He goes everywhere with (them)," said Mandy.

The TSA it seems saw the toy as a weapon.

"He took the hammer and he tapped the wall. 'See, it's hard. It could be used as a weapon,'" Mandy explained. "So, Drew's also holding the ball, and I said, 'Well, how about the ball?' He (said), 'Oh, he can keep that."

Dr. Mandy was told he would need to have the toy shipped if he wanted to keep it, a process which caused them to almost miss their plane, so he pitched it.

"It just killed me to have to throw it away because he's been carrying this like for 20 years," Mandy said.

Disgusted, he wrote TSA a letter. A response wasn't far behind.

"Very polite. Very apologetic. He was embarrassed. He (said) we have to review how we deal with special needs individuals. Obviously, he (said), we're doing a terrible job," Mandy told us. "It made me feel that there is still hope, that there is still justice and that there's still somebody who listens to people's problems (in) the federal government.

That's because federal security told him there are 800 TSA agents at Metro Airport and they are all going to be retrained based on Drew's case.

We also spoke to a federal security director who said this incident is still under investigation, but as far as they can tell right now, better judgment was needed.

The TSA took away one toy hammer, but they were still able to take another toy hammer on board the airplane. How did that happen?

Drew's mother, always prepared, had another one in her backpack and that already passed through security with no problem.

Amtrak Vs The TSA E-mail
Monday, 07 March 2011 20:39

In case you don't know, as a hold over from decades past, Amtrak operates its own police force (fully armed & sworn law enforcement officers, though I am unclear about the qualifications and training requirements). This police force has national jurisdiction, which is a bit troubling, though in this case, that weight has been thrown around against the TSA.

Amtrak's Chief of Police has barred TSA officials from its security checkpoints and terminals after getting reports (from an anti-TSA web site) about a TSA invasion of an Amtrak station.

Video of the surprise invasion by the TSA is available here on LiveLeak.com. The search was first revealed on the blog gizmodo.com.

Support Amtrak and fight TSA invasions, or else the TSA will continue to invade ANY conduit for travel that they think they can get away with.

Company Develops Body Cavity Scanner E-mail
News
Thursday, 24 February 2011 19:02

As if TSA abuses aren't bad enough, an Australian company has now developed a full body cavity x-ray scanner for those occasions when sticking their hand in your underwear and feeling around wasn't humiliating enough.  The device is of course excused as a tool for finding drugs smuggled into a country by drug mules using airlines.

This article is from an Australian publication, but given the "progress" that country has made in Citizenry Humiliation (this should be a de-merrit badge given to governments and legislators), who is going to bet this will not soon make its way to the US, Britian, or the rest of the EU.

Soon your helpful minimum wage TSA goons will get much higher power x-ray guns which they can indiscriminately use against the non-submitting public.  "Oh didn't find anything.  Guess we were wrong.  Enjoy your cancer. May be next time you won't act so suspicious eh buddy? Heheh"

Alaska Rep. Sharon Cissna Returns By Sea After Invasive TSA Patdown Request E-mail
Monday, 21 February 2011 23:17

I was just passed this link by a TWD reader that Alaska Rep. Sharon Cissna (an Alaska State Legislature Democrat), who has had a mastectomy, was returning to Alaska after a medical procedure in Seattle, but due to the TSA's invasive policies, is returning by ferry.  The TSA insisted that in addition to the background x-ray / millimeter wave scan they performed on her, they needed Cissna to submit to an enhanced grope-down because they have to "see and touch your prosthetic device, cast or support brace as part of the screening process." Rep Sissna, sensibly objected, was no doubt removed from the airport, and she has chosen to return to Alaska by sea travel, rather than face the TSA's abusive procedures.

HuffingtonPost is reporting this as well (basically the same article text).

Now lets see if Cissna faces the same threats of a civil lawsuit, $10k or $11k depending on which poorly informed TSA representative you ask.

Patriot Act Renewal Votes E-mail
Tuesday, 15 February 2011 22:20

The Patriot Act renewal passed in the House (H.R.514) with rules attached that did not allow debate or amendments, despite reassurances of yearly reviews from the government that initially passed it (President Bush & Congress on October 26, 2001).  The Senate will soon try to do the same, led by Vermont Democrat Sen. Leahy, apparently the enemy of citizens that value their constitutional rights.

Read more below to find out more about this Constitution trampling bill.

Amtrak Sleepers E-mail

Think of all the times you checked in at the counter of the airport. "Is this bag small enough?" "How many carry-ons can I have?" "It costs HOW MUCH for an extra checked bag???"

Then put all that behind you. Traveling with small children is immeasurably easier on Amtrak. The number of bags is pretty flexible, especially when they see a baby in a car seat. Don't get me wrong, you can't pack the everything and the kitchen sink.... you have to check the sink.... but if it is 50lbs or lighter, chance are you can pack it.

The Roomette TWD is living in for the next ~34hrs is not the Hilton, but it is about 10x the cubic feet of passenger space compared to two airline seats. And the amenities are truly beyond what anyone but Virgin Airlines can think of offering (unless they charge you $2k / seat).

With a 110 outlet (and the extension cord we brought) we have all the power we need for DVD player, laptop, Sprint cell phone in WiFi-Tethering mode (more on this later), and a night light.

First impressions are, we could do a lot worse than the accommodations on this trip.

Worse, like flying. We sure are glad we aren't flying.

Welcome to Travel With Dignity, a site dedicated to proving that you and your family can travel the US, citizen or not, with out submitting to humiliating treatment at the hands of poorly trained federal thugs masquerading under the color of authority as the TSA.

Our goal will be to provide information about alternative modes of transportation to help you, the traveling public, get where you need to go with out removing your shoes, your belt, or your dignity.

Our travel blog will be kicking off this site's awareness efforts by personally demonstrating that it is possible for a family of three (with an infant) to travel across the nation 2500 miles to visit relatives (hopefully before one in particular dies) with out the use of a transportation method that is "secured" by the TSA.

Car Talk vs the TSA E-mail
Monday, 21 February 2011 20:12

Tom & Ray, also known as Click & Clack the Tappet brothers, have a weekly NPR radio show where they discuss cars, car repair, a weekly puzzler, and anything that amuses them or is worth their listeners time.

In this week's show, (Tom or Ray, I have a limited ability to discern who is who - I'll just use "he") he reveals in a moment of candid reflection that he refuses to fly because of the TSA. Tom & Ray already have proven to be sensible with their advice and again prove, at least for me, their sensible attitudes towards liberty and privacy.

So support Car Talk, as one of the (if not the only) few NPR personalities to have publicly stand up to the TSA.

Charges Dropped Against Citizen E-mail

Word of the dropped charges came to me via email announcement from a local civil rights organization.

The activist (also known as a normal citizen who doesn't want to be pushed around by TSA bullies, and in this case overbearing heavy handed LEOs who should know better) was filming the TSA Checkpoint from the publicly accessible side, which is allowed, even according to the TSA's own policies.  Naturally the TSA goons don't like being filmed and they called in the Police who continued the heavy handed response.

One important thing to note is that the incident is from 2009, while the court case was heard and settled in the past year.  Hopefully this isn't just a case of good timing for the defense, but rather a citizenry that is waking up and realizing that they don't have to put up with this slide toward totalitarianism.

Thankfully a jury found the citizen not guilty.  One can hope that the citizen will now file a Federal suit for unlawful infringement of civil liberties against the TSA employees and the police officers who backed up and gave literal force to this abuse of power.

T-Minus 4hrs E-mail
Monday, 10 January 2011 04:11

We are in the final hours before leaving on the train.  We will for the most part be able to take everything from the car trip portion with us on the train, with the exceptions of a few unnecessary or bulky items.  Fortunately for those not aware, trains are amazingly roomy and each passenger can take 2 checked bags, a personal item (laptop / purse) AND three checked bags.  The checked baggage dimensions are pretty huge, and the carry one baggage dimensions are, I think, pretty standard and compatible with airplane dimensions.

The space and freedom available on a train are the primary selling points of train travel.  You have many cars you can walk up and down; Lounge cars / restaurant cars, observatory cars, and sleeping cars. Now the luxury of trains can be over-hyped, and is by no means the same as train travel in its hey day.

For a family traveling across the country with diaper bags, suitcases, spare food for both a baby and an allergy avoiding adult, the extra space available on Amtrak can not be emphasized enough. Don't believe me?  Call them up your self.  Ask for Debbie.  She did a fantastic job on my 81 minute call to book my tickets.  I'll have more information about my call with Amtrak customer service and my discussion with the call center manager coming up soon.

What is TWD and Why E-mail
Written by Jason Robinson

TWD Blog #1
What is TWD?

What is TWD (Travel With Dignity).  Travel with dignity is my ode to the America of the not too distant past.  To a time when the American public was made of citizens and not suspects. TWD is in a way a memorial service and a celebration.

Many citizens morn the passing of the time when the public was innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, judged by a jury of their peers. We stand around the battered body of our once free nation, asking each other "How did this happen? How did we not see this coming?" Our government, and many of our neighbors, believe that in order to travel this nation, we must give up the rights we always had, that were promised to be held for us by our government. I say no, and so do many others who believe we are not guilty until proven innocent. That we do retain our rights and that we have not surrendered our dignity.

At the same time that we morn the passing of our rights and liberties, TWD is here to declare that this is also a time for celebration. At no other time in our nations history, and likely in no time in our future, will the people on this earth have the resources and the remaining freedom to be able to travel with as may options as we now have.

The alternatives to air travel may not be as convenient, and may not be as cheep, but for the time being we do have many alternatives,. A growing group of people like myself, like James Bab and John Tyner, are stepping up to help others find those alternatives and demonstrate that we do not have to submit to an encroaching government’s demands to give up our rights. To take off our shoes.  To remove our belts, and all but bend over, turn our head, and cough.

TWD is here to demonstrate first hand that travel with out the TSA is possible, even for a family with infant children and that it is a better option.

TWD started, as many things do these days, with several friends talking about how we didn’t like where we saw our nation heading.  We shared many long back and forth discussions and being a technologically minded group, our efforts naturally turned to how we could use our experience to help show others what is possible and why change is necessary.

There are few better ways to teach, than to lead by example, so when an emergency trip across the nation was needed, and after having participated in several of the Opt Out day discussions and activities, I decided to take the plunge and Opt Out For Good. My small family of 3 is heading 2500 miles (1 way) across this nation to visit relatives, and at every step of the way, we will be safe, secure, and free of interference by the TSA.

This freedom to travel might to exist for long.  Some see a time when even the freedom to travel by personal vehicle will be curtailed, monitored, and "secured" by paranoid and power hungry agencies.

To help demonstrate that you can Travel With Dignity, my family will make a cross country trip that takes 3x as long, and costs only a few hundred more dollars.  But we gain freedom, a lot more packing space, and we keep out dignity intact.

Follow along as I help explain how this trip is possible and what you can expect if you want to Travel With Dignity.
